As Australian small business owners we absolutely love taking any opportunity to support other small businesses in Australia, mostly because we find incredible, unique and creative people doing amazing things but also because we know how much it means to them to know their blood, sweat and tears are appreciated. Of course, our priority is to always find and support businesses that prioritise sustainability and ethical production, so without further ado we present our favourite high quality, low impact Australian brands.
With a focus on creating timeless and versatile designs at a high quality, Hakea produces swimwear to last. Diverging from the typical fast fashion model, they reduce waste by releasing small collections on an inspiration-only basis or according to customer requests and ensure there is a high standard of ethical practice in their process. They recently made the switch to producing with Econyl; a high quality Italian nylon, recycled from ghost fishing nets and fabric mill scraps and they prioritise low waste shipping throughout their supply chain. Our top pick is the Palma top + the Santiago bottom in Clay.
We have a particular soft spot for Seljak as they are two sisters on a mission to reduce textile waste (among many other amazing things!), they are certainly woman after our own hearts! Just to put it into perspective, since 2016 they have diverted 2,825kg of textiles waste from landfill and that's just the beginning of their huuuge list of achievements. Ethical practice and environmental impact are at the forefront of their mission and the duo are reaching for the stars. Our top pick is the fringed ochre blanket because that colour 😍
Living by the mantra of 'Love Your Insides. Love The Earth.' Pana produces some of the most delicious, organic vegan chocolate that even non vegans will love. The environmentally minded company do regular tree plantings and as of 2017 had planted 50,000 trees, if you'd like to get involved in one of their events follow them on socials for updates. Our top pick is the strawberries and pistachio bar but honestly, give us any of their delicious creations!
These rugs will make you want to fly away with Aladdin. Finally, a durable picnic rug that looks beautiful, we've literally been waiting our entire lives. Every sale goes toward supporting rainforest rescue but the thing we love the most is the quality of their rugs, ours will definitely become an heirloom. Our top pick is the Spice Forest Rug.
Our local Grampians alchemist hand produces everything here in the magical mountains with Australian botanicals. Designing scents as she is delightfully inspired to do so and carefully curating the most delicious earthy zero waste soap bars is the trademark of her work. Her entire process is plastic free and her attention to detail is impeccable, as an avid nature protector we know her process will always prioritise the earth. Our top picks are the Clover scent and the Wolf's garden cleanse bar.
Passionate environmentalists, Tom and Sacha began developing a natural high quality sun protection while working on the Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. Building from a marine biology and coral reef restoration background, their focus is on eliminating the environmental impact of chemicals from sunscreen on our precious reefs. Our top pick is their SunButter SPF50 Water Resistant Reef Safe Sunscreen, it wears well and rubs in clear - even on your face and is an absolute daily essential for us!
These guys plant ten trees per hat sold, we'll take our hats off to that (sorry, couldn't resist!) , they also use pure, natural fibres and ethically produce their pieces in certified factories in Sri Lanka, Mongolia and China. Our top pick is the Andy Auburn but hey, a hat is a pretty personal decision.
That wraps up our favourite Australian brands, they're all perfect for the festive Summer season! We'd absolutely love to hear about your favourite ethical and sustainable Australian brands and why they're doing great things, leave a comment below to let us know.
Much love, Kel and Em xx
