 SUSTAINABILITY:

Hemp is one of the most sustainable fibres is existence, from yield to water consumption through to chemical use, hemp is the epitome of sustainability all the way from plant to fibre.

  • LOW WATER USAGE: Growing Hemp uses significantly less water than most other plants. For example, when compared to cotton, hemp uses half as much water for an equivalent harvest.
  • LOW IMPACT, LESS WASTE: Hemp takes approximately 3-4 months to reach full harvest and does not exhaust the soil from its nutrients, in fact hemp actually contributes rich organic matter to the soil & helps with moisture retention. Due to it's low impact and rapid growth, hemp can be harvested 3-4 times a year, once harvested every part of the Hemp plant is used so there is nothing wasted throughout the process.
  • HIGH YIELD: Hemp has a much higher yield than most plants, this means that more fibre can be grown on the same amount of land, therefore there is less land required to be farmed (and more room to plant trees!). To gain perspective, on an equal amount of land, Hemp can produce 200-250% more fibre than cotton and 600% more fibre than flax (used for linen).
  • LOW CHEMICAL IMPACT: Hemp is a self-sustaining plant, which basically means that it doesn’t require pesticides & fertilisers to grow as it’s resistant to bugs & moths.
  • CARBON REDUCTION: Absorbing & retaining up to 4 times more carbon dioxide than trees and its other rival fibres, hemp has the potential to significantly reduce the carbon footprint.

WHY DO WE CHOOSE HEMP FIBRE FOR CLOTHING?

Hemp is an extremely durable fabric, it has up to three times the tensile strength of cotton. If cared for, the lifespan of your garment could well be as long as yours.

Under our core value of choose well, buy less, hemp outshines any other fibre - it is often described as wearing in rather than wearing out as it becomes softer and more comfortable with every wear without losing shape, fit or quality.

Other than supporting longevity in our pieces, hemp has many qualities that make it ideal for clothing. Its antibacterial qualities means it doesn’t need to be washed as often & you can reduce your water usage, it is also very resistant to UV light so it doesn’t lose integrity in the sun. The hollow nature of the fibre enables breathability and insulation, meaning garments are cool in summer & warm in winter.

Finally, due to its porous nature hemp absorbs and retains dye making it an ideal choice for our natural dye process.

Our priority is to always make the most sensible choice when it comes to preservation of resources and our planet, hemp is not only completely compostable at the end of it's life but has a significantly lower impact throughout the entirety of it's life than any other fabric.
